Yesterday we published an article about an “official license” Star Wars NFT collection that is launched on the WAX blockchain. I am an NFT enthusiast, so I thought it would be great to share the news! Well, that article unintentionally ended up putting us in the middle of a very heated and passionate debate in the NFT space. In the end, it was a mistake and we didn’t want to cause this kind of drama!
The press release we received stated the following:
The officially licensed concept for the original Star Wars Stormtrooper design created by Shepperton Studios in 1976 was immortalized in an NFT collection soon to be launched on the WAX blockchain.
In a collaboration between Tyranno Studios and Helsinki-based game studio Web3, Supremacy Games, 10,000 NFT Stormtroopers will go on sale, providing continued access to future launches of other Shepperton Studios designs and will also be used as playable characters. in an upcoming metaverse game. This is the first time that an officially licensed Star Wars IP has been represented as an NFT.
Tyranno Studios has been hugely successful in integrating major brands into Web3. Last year, the company partnered with Sony Pictures and AMC Theaters to give away the official Spider-man: No Way Home NFTs.
The part of this that started the debate was where they state: “This is the first time an officially licensed IP has been released. Star Wars was represented as NFT. And that set things in motion. We started getting bombarded with Tweets from the VeVe community about how wrong this was, and it was tough because we were initially blamed as if this was how I was presenting it personally. But it wasn’t like that.
As I was in the midst of a very real anxiety attack, trying to stay calm and defuse the situation, the tweets kept coming. I was doing my best to explain to everyone that it was in the press release we received and not my personal request.
The tweets started as follows on my personal Twitter account and on the GeekTyrant Twitter account. This is what triggered it:
Hey @Joey Paur I came across your article, thought it was worth noting @veve_official is an original partner of Disney and has left Star Wars NFTs for nearly a year. They released animated Darth Vader, Boba Fett and many more:

This article is wrong. This is very wrong! The first official license @Star Wars the digital collecting that is on the blockchain is on the # Must app!@Disney @veve_official

I ended up having a civil and polite conversation with these people, but man … I was really dying inside because I hate sharing wrong information! I corrected the mistake, though, and read the tweets seeing many heated opinions that just poured fuel on the fire of my anxiety! I can laugh about it now, but damn!
I have since learned that the VeVe Digital Collectibles company has issued dozens of official licenses Star Wars NFT collectibles and have a strong relationship with Disney. I have been in the NFT space for a little over a year and have never come across VeVe or their products. If I had known, I wouldn’t have included the part of the release where it said, “This is the first time an officially licensed Star Wars IP has been represented as an NFT.”
But the creators of this new Stormtrooper NFT project confirm their claim and responded in the Twitter thread with the following:
Our NFTs are the first to be minted and traded on an official blockchain, making it the first “real” NFT of its kind.
– Original NFT Stormtrooper (@StormTrooperNFT) October 14, 2022
Questions were asked and some clarifications were provided by the creators of the new NFT:
1) Currently not, as our licenses are completely separate from Star Wars / Disney, and we are only allowed to mint and sell original NFT Stormtroopers.
2) I’m not sure about this, however I can DEFINITELY say we would be open to the idea 💪– Original NFT Stormtrooper (@StormTrooperNFT) October 14, 2022
But one of the studios behind the new NFT Stormtrooper, Shepperton Design Studios, has already been sued by Lucasfilm for producing and selling Stormtrooper helmets and other costume replicas of the Star Wars franchise, and they lost. I’m not sure how things will turn out with these NFTs.
The following statement was recently released by Shepperton Design Studios:

It was just a wild and unexpected ride! I love passionate fans! But damn it … that was insanely stressful of me!
I am also part of a team that is working to create better definitions for the NFT Web3 space and always try to connect with experts to build consensus in the industry. If you want to help us, who do we follow? Where do we find more information? Who are the experts we should talk to?
