Martin Scorsese is developing a GANGS OF NEW YORK series with all the new characters

Martin Scorsese is intended to produce a Gang of New York series for Miramax Television. It will be based on Herbert Asbury’s 1927 non-fiction book of the same name. As you know, Scorsese directed the fantastic 2002 movie he starred in Leonardo Dicaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis And Cameron Diaz.

This new series is said to be a new take on the story that will focus on all the new characters who weren’t in the movie. The show was written by the playwright / television writer Brett Leonard (Shantaram). I loved the movie and am actually quite excited about a show that will tell a new story in that crazy New York City story of the 1800s.

The book’s description reads: “Focusing on the saloons, gambling dens and winding alleys of the Bowery and the infamous Five Points borough, The Gangs of New York dramatically evokes the misery and shocking violence of a turbulent era, when named after colorful criminals like Dandy John Dolan, Bill the Butcher and Hell-Cat Maggie lurked in the shadows and notorious gangs like Plug Uglies, Dead Rabbits and Bowery Boys ruled the streets. A gallery of prostitute thieves, pimps, poisoners, pickpockets, murderers and thieves, Herbert Asbury’s whirlwind tour through low-rise nineteenth-century New York City has become an indispensable classic of urban history.

According to the report, Scorsese liked the script that Leonard handed in and joined the project. Scorsese said in a statement, “This time and era of America’s history and heritage is full of characters and stories that we couldn’t fully explore in a two-hour film. A television series gives us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world to life and all the implications it has had and still has on our society. “
