Tom Cruise has worked for years with Elon Musk and NASA to shoot a film in space, and although Russia was ahead of him with the one to leave planet Earth, It looks like the actor will be at least the first civilian to get out of the Space Station. Or so said Donna Langley, director of Universal Pictures, who in an interview with the BBC talked about the titanic project they have in their hands, which has a budget of over 200 million dollars and will be directed by Doug Liman, yes, “hopefully”.

“Tom Cruise will take us to space. He will take the world to space. That’s the plan.”Langley explains to the BBC, “We have a great project under development with Tom that includes just that. To bring a rocket to the space station, shoot and hopefully be the first civilian to get out of the space station. “ The film has a script written by Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”, “Barry Seal: The Trafficker”) and according to Langley “It actually takes place mainly on Earth, but then the protagonist has to go to space to save the world”. He further describes Cruise’s character as “an unfortunate boy who is in the position of being the only person who could save the planet.”
What has not been announced are other cast members, although as early as September 2020 they were looking for a mate for Cruise. Although there were rumors that filming on the film could have started filming in October 2021, there is no start date yet, but Langely’s words suggest he may be getting closer and closer. and bearing in mind that Cruise, no matter how well you speak, is already 60, that shouldn’t be put off for long. The head of Universal also explained that the idea was sold to the studio by the actor in the midst of a pandemic: “He asked us to make a Zoom call. He walked in and said, ‘Guys, I have this great project.'”
Attract the general public
And what could it take for a studio to make such an investment in such a risky film if nothing like this had ever been done? According to Langely, it is becoming increasingly difficult to attract audiences to theaters and the film industry faces new challenges because the great special effects are no longer enough and the bar is getting higher and higher: “For films to matter, for films to connect with the cultural spirit, create movie stars, and create directors and careers, you really need an authentic cinematic experience.”
