The recent Film Festival, which took place between Monday 3 and Thursday 6 October, improved the figures of the previous edition, held last May, by 82.2%. The result wasn’t exciting (1,291,799 admissions), but it did give a much-needed boost to the weekend box office, where “Smile” and “God’s Crooked Lines” fought a very close duel for first place.
Finally, it was Paramount Pictures’ horror film that won # 1, even getting the feat of doing so in its second week, after a premiere in which it was surpassed by the return of ‘Avatar’ to theaters. According to Comscore data, ‘Smile’ raised € 859,974, which is a 52% increase over the previous week, which is not often seen, with an excellent average per cinema of 2,739 euros and 122,852 tickets sold. Parker Finn’s film, which appears to be quite popular, already amasses a total of 2.28 million. Paramount is definitely on the move.

‘Smile’ just beat the Spaniard ‘Los renglones torcidos de Dios’, who made his debut in second place with € 828.091, having been released, yes, on more screens (425, compared to 314 of ‘Smile’). “Avatar” drops from number 1 to number 3 (or 43%), adding € 566,167 to a total of 2.20 million for the revival alone, which could indicate a much higher interest than we expected for the sequel, ” Avatar: The Sense of Water ‘, which opens in December.
At number 4 we find one of the great hits of the season, ‘Tadeo Jones 3: La Tabla Esmeralda’, which holds up spectacularly in its seventh week, with a slight drop of 15% and € 387,261 more, which officially exceeds 10 million (10.17 million to be exact). Another Spanish premiere film, ‘In the margins’, with Penélope Cruz and Luis Tosar closes the top 5which scratches € 249,482 with an average of € 813 on 307 screens.
The romantic comedy ‘Journey to Paradise’ also showed a lasting effect at the box office, coming in at # 6, very close to 3.5 million overall. This is followed by ‘Model 77’, one of the favorite choices of the Film Festival, which adds 169,932 euros to its non-negligible total of 1.51 million in three weeks. In the 8 we find ‘La vida padre’, which rises to 1.71 million in its fourth week. A reason for joy for our cinema, since with it half of the top 10 films are Spanish.
Rounding out the top 10 ‘Argentina, 1985’, which is up 3% in its second week (despite arriving Friday 21 October on Prime Video), and ‘Don’t worry, dear’, one of the most talked about films recently (though not because of the film itself) which has amassed 1.29 million in three weeks. Total, the 20 most viewed films of the weekend in Spain amounted to € 3.98 million, only € 300,000 more than last week.
The billboard is dressed up for Halloween
The night of the witches is approaching and next week’s previews reflect this. Comes on Friday 14th October ‘Halloween: The End’, the closing of the new trilogy of the popular horror saga that narrates the last confrontation between Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and the killer Michael Myers, an unmissable event for fans of the genre that promises to give a boost to the box office. But we cannot lose sight of ‘Cerdita’, a Spanish film that arrives preceded by good reviews at festivals and a lot of anticipation, which could become one of the revelations of the autumn. On the other hand, a game of European cinema also arrives in the cinemas with the Italians’ Diabolik ‘and’ The Legend of the Crab King ‘, the Spanish’ Girasoles Salvajes’, the French ‘Peter von Kant’ and the Germans’ All Tranquillo Il front’.
