“Our Pinocchio talks about disobedience” Guillermo Del Toro talks about his new film – Diffusion (Netflix)
In a recent interview with the international media, William of the Bull talked about his new film ‘Pinocchio’, in which he adapts one of the most loved stories by the public, but seasons it with his own peculiar style and way of seeing the world. The tape is a Netflix production that is about to be released in December 2022, although there is no precise date yet, it will previously be screened in theaters.
During the interview, Guillermo del Toro commented that there are two stories that define his childhood, Pinocchio and Frankenstein, citing that in both stories he is attracted to the idea of being thrown into a world that we barely understand and to which we seek. to make intuitions as we grow, pointing out that they are stories that touch those experiences of learning and pain.
Pinocchio is a character with whom you can talk about universal stories
The author of films such as ‘The labyrinth of pan’ or ‘The shape of water’, said that Pinocchio is perhaps one of the few characters in history capable of being universal and adaptable to everything, that even if you have not read his story, do you know or think you know. Therefore, they function as metaphors of science or human emotion.
15 years ago, when we started the process, I thought it could be a great tool to talk about how precious and fragile we are as human beings and how much we need each other. “
Del Toro is delighted with the result of a film that seeks to convey this message of humanity and a sense of community. The director collaborated with Mark Gustafson to direct the film, with which he ended up giving a dark atmosphere to the original story of Pinocchio, placing it in the time of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, a German ally during the Second World War.
The Mexican director also pointed out that his Pinocchio story is about disobedience, arguing that this is a major factor in becoming a human being and how this process has nothing to do with changing oneself or others, but with understanding, both of ourselves and of those around us.
And for me, the first step towards conscience and soul is disobedience, “said the director
“What I wanted was for everyone to learn from him (Pinocchio),” added the director, recalling how in this story it is the characters around Pinocchio who learn from him, and not vice versa as in the original story. And with that, he also added a comment on animation, pointing out that it is an art and not just a film genre or a medium aimed at children.
It can deal with serious, deep and moving topics, “Del Toro emphasized about animation.
The rumors for the Spanish dub have not yet been revealed. But for the English version you have Ewan McGregor as Sebastian the Cricket; Gregory Mann as Pinocchio; Christoph Waltz as the antagonist Volpe and David Bradley as Gepetto. In addition, part of the film was made by Mexican animators, in the newly created Chucho Workshop, located in Perla Tapatia.
An artisanal film, made by hand and with the most precise care possible in every detail, made with all the characteristic style of Guillermo del Toro. The film will debut in Mexico in a gala performance at the Morelia International Film Festival and is expected to hit the Netflix streaming platform in December after its theatrical release.
