The film ‘white’ directed by Fernando Guzzoni inspired by the scandalous Spiniak case, which shocked the whole of Chile in 2003 and which has just been awarded at the Venice International Film Festival, will be in charge of representing Chile in the Best Foreign Film category at the next delivery of the 2023 Academy Awards.

The film’s director said that although the film has a fictional treatment, the story is inspired the spiniak casea judicial process that in 2003 came to discover a network of child prostitution and pederasty led by the high Chilean businessman Claudio Spiniak, convicted on the charges and incarcerated for a decade in the maximum security prison in Santiago.

Prior to the production of the film Blanquita, Fernando Guzzoni carried out an in-depth investigation for about a year into the controversial police case. Likewise, he undertook a similar process while filming the film ‘Jesus’where he addressed the case of Daniel Zamudio, a case that represented the homophobic violence of the country.

The film, being a free adaptation of the real case, tells the story of Blanca, played by Laura López, an 18-year-old girl who lives in a home for minors run by the priest Manuel. It is here that the religious denounces the carrying out of sexual parties involving well-known politicians and businessmen with children and adolescents.

I am very honored that Blanquita is Chile’s representative at the Oscars and grateful for the support of all colleagues at the Film Academy, ”commented director Fernando Guzzoni.

In the process, the Chilean Film Academy chose Blanquita to compete for a spot in the awards of the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, better known as the Oscar Awards, in the category of Best foreign film. The ceremony will take place on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles.

Chilean Film Academy’s selection is not the first recognition that ‘Blanquita’ has received. Already in August this year the film was awarded at the Venice Film Festival with the prize for Best Screenplay of the Horizons section. On that occasion, the audience cheered on their feet for more than five minutes at the end of the film.

Blanquita’s production feels a great responsibility and an honor to represent Chile at the Oscars

The producer of the film ‘Blanquita’ Giancarlo Nasi, declared the honor he feels because the Chilean Film Academy has chosen the film Blanquita as the country’s representative for the Oscars. Underlining the strong theme that faces the film where a young woman excluded from society faces the powerful and corruption.

He also added that Blanquita has managed to generate great expectations and recognition from specialized critics and audiences around the world, and that it continues to be premiered at major international festivals. acknowledging the responsibility that derives from the appointment to represent the country in view of the Oscars.

Guzzoni added that the film puts an urgent theme of impunity and structural injustice in a thriller key, arguing that the reception the film has received from critics, as well as the support of partners and distributors, will allow them to carry out a campaign that he tries to make the message of ‘Blanquita’ visible and to position the film in the best possible way.
