Is Smile based on a true story? Confusion Among Horror Fans – Paramount (Courtesy)
Since September 29th, ‘Smile’ has left a lot of uncertainty among those who have already been able to see it in cinemas. And it is that despite his story of a monstrous curse, there are those who believe that his concept may be based on real events. The truth is, we clear all the details about the new horror movie that is creating confusion.
The story of ‘Smile’is written and directed by Parker Finn, who it is based on its short film name ‘Laura hasn’t slept’, a disturbing thriller where the protagonist of the plot is also Caitlin Stasey, the girl with the creepy smile. But in the case of the Paramount horror film, it’s Sosie Bacon who plays Dr. Rose Cotter, a psychiatrist who witnesses the suicide of one of her patients.
The girl goes to Dr. Rose to help her stop the demon that is chasing her, and that only she can see manifested in other people, dead or alive, who always have a terrifying smile on their faces. After the traumatic accident, Rose begins to witness strange events, and this is how she begins the story of ‘Smile’.
Although it causes some confusion, ‘Smile’ not based on a true storybut it is based on the aforementioned short film by the director himself, which earned him the recognition of Parker Finn, and with which he managed to get a contact from Paramount to finally make his first horror feature film.
Where did the idea for the story of ‘Smile’ come from?
Finn said he took a lot of inspiration from classic horror movies for “Smile”, however, it’s a completely original story, which isn’t a sequel, spin-off or remake. What he wanted to achieve with this film was to scare people, but he states that to achieve this he didn’t want the typical scene with a scare, but to explore people’s daily fears.
Horror films such as “The Shining”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, among many others from the 70s and 80s, were the ones who helped Finn with the inspiration for the film. As for a sequel, the director explained that to make ‘Smile 2’ there would have to be a completely different story, but one that could continue with the same universe.
Plus, ‘Smile’ managed to be one of the best releases of the year in terms of horror films, so it might be a safe bet for Paramount to give the sequel the green light, and even more so with the story’s over. We will have to wait to see if the producer is encouraged with a second part.
