The revival of ‘Avatar’ dominates the Spanish box office the weekend before the Film Festival

The days leading up to a Film Festival are usually rather scarce in the collection because the public tends to wait for the days when tickets cost 3.50 euros (logically). But in the state in which the Spanish box office was in the last few weeks, it couldn’t go down much more. The total remained practically the same as the previous weekend, with 3.65 million euros and 528 thousand viewers, according to data from Comscore. Yes, we are rewarding number 1. But with a spectacular feeling of déjà vu.

The revival of ‘Avatar’ dominates the Spanish box office the weekend before the Film Festival

Thirteen years after its original release, “Avatar” is once again the highest-grossing film of the weekend in our country. James Cameron’s film is back in theaters to prepare for the premiere of its sequel, “Avatar: The Sense of Water”, next December. It debuted on 475 screens, the highest number of the weekend. Disney got € 988,927 and an average of € 3,410 per cinema. More than 130,000 people wanted to return to Pandora. It bodes well for the sequel, which comes a long way from the first installment and it was hard to say if viewers were interested in this and a possible 3D revival. Clearly, there is.

Another novelty, this from 2022, occupies the second position. ‘Smile’ gets € 565,208 and an average of € 1,865 per cinema. An acceptable start for Paramount Pictures’ horror film given the figures of the last few weeks and being before the Film Festival. We will see how it will be accumulated after the days of special price.

“Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Tablet” drops to third place with a decrease of 28%. It adds 455,333 euros and reaches a total of 9.46 million euros. It continues to be the preferred family option and there are still weeks to go with no big competitors.

‘Model 77’ remains in fourth place but loses 41% of the collection as for the weekend of its premiere. It adds up to € 245,333 and reaches a total of € 877,000. Alberto Rodríguez’s film is not taking off. It reaches an average per cinema of only 734 euros, quite poor for the reception it has received from critics.

‘Journey to Paradise’ drops to fifth place, with 44% less box office in its fourth week. It adds 241,790 euros and touches 3 million euros, approaching the 3.3 million euros of “The Lost City”, the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the year.

The review of the rest of the week’s releases is pretty grim. The next new addition is ‘The wild girl’, and is in eighth position. Distributed by Sony on more than 330 screens, it grossed just € 111,000, with an average of € 345 per room. Something better went for ‘Argentina, 1985’, which, released in only 59 screens, occupies the tenth position but with an average of 1,662 euros per screen.

Spanish cinema day in style

This week, Spanish cinema is the protagonist, not only because it celebrates its festival on Thursday 6 October, but also because two titles with quite powerful names arrive in theaters. One is the adaptation of “God’s Crooked Lines” with Oriol Paulo directing and Bárbara Lennie in the lead role.. Plus, it will hit theaters on Thursday, so you can still enjoy it as part of the Film Festival. The other national premiere is ‘In the margins’, directed by Juan Diego Botto and starring Penélope Cruz and Luis Tosar. Also released were ‘Fall’, ‘Baila con la vida’, ‘El vasco’ and ‘A story of love and desire’, among others.
