“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” was Amazon’s biggest gamble in terms of audiovisual production. The platform invested a billion dollars in adapting JRR Tolkien’s work for the first season alone, which ensured its continuity and renewal for more episodes. Also, despite receiving harsh criticism from some fans, the series garnered 1,300 million minutes seen at the premiere of the first two episodes alone, outperforming its contender: ‘The Dragon’s House’.

To date, this series is the most expensive in history, a fact to take into account when thinking about a second season. Amazon’s bet was very expensive, and it pursues a purpose, it was pretty clear that we wouldn’t have a single bet because it’s a series that you can expect a lot more from. It was the large monetary investment, coupled with the success among viewers, which ensured that we will have an upcoming installment of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”.
In fact, next season’s filming has already started at the new Bray studios outside London. Yes, we will have more stories that will explore the world of Middle-earth and show us its bizarre inhabitants: the headstrong dwarves, the elegant elves and the terrifying orcs who fight under the command of Sauron, just to name a few of the characters from the vast universe from Tolkien.
The Amazon series shows us characters and elements that we have already encountered in the films “The Lord of the Rings” and this allows us to get even better into the story. Some examples of this familiarity occur with characters like Galadriel or Sauron, of whom we still don’t know who is in the production and who the theories hover as the chapters progress. Also, the first episode was filmed in New Zealand, Middle-earth of the Peter Jackson trilogy, which allowed us to connect even more with the series. However, next season’s production will move to the UK, so we’re going to lose some of that familiarity we had with Middle-earth that we used to know through the big screen.
The new Middle-earth
The UK will become the new geographic point to locate Middle-earth, being the new setting for the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. And although audiences place Middle-earth in New Zealand (where the films were shot), Tolkien chose the UK as the starting point for his story. Therefore, this new collocation may be more exact than the one known to all, providing even more fidelity to the writer’s original material.
