Apple TV + released the first trailer for Will Smiththe upcoming film Emancipationwhich derives from the director Antonio Fuqua. The film tells the true story of a man who escapes from slavery and embarks on a perilous journey to be reunited with his family. It sounds like a pretty incredible movie that will tell a powerful story.
Smith will play the role of Peter, “a runaway slave who fled the Union Army during the Civil War and fooled bounty hunters for over 10 days across the Louisiana swamps, masking his scent with onions. The army photos taken of Peter showing the scars on his back after being whipped were published in 1863 and became known as the “scourged returns” photos, which became a means of illustrating the cruelty of slavery. “
Ben Foster plays alongside Smith, in the role of Fassel, “a man who stubbornly pursues any slave who tries to flee to freedom, including Peter”. The film is also the protagonist Charmaine Bingwa as Peter’s beloved wife, Dodienne. Gilbert Owùor plays Gordon, a slave man who works in the same field as Peter while Mustafa Shakir plays Cailloux, a free black man who also serves in the Union army.
Emancipation will premiere in theaters on December 2 and will begin streaming on Apple TV + on December 9.
