I honestly didn’t expect much from the recently released horror movie Smile. Judging by the trailers, it looked like it would provide mediocre horror entertainment. I wasn’t really convinced by the whole “smile” gimmick of the story. But last weekend my teenage girls wanted to go see a horror movie so we all went and saw Smile and in the end it was better than I thought!
Smile is a very entertaining horror movie that was incredibly intense and had some legitimately scary moments! I have to say that part of what made this cinematic experience so enjoyable was the screams coming from the audience and watching my girls go crazy over the course of the film as well. It legitimately terrified them.
The film’s story centers on Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), who, after witnessing a bizarre traumatic accident involving a patient, begins to experience terrifying events that she cannot explain and many of these experiences involve people who wear sinister smiles on their faces. As this overwhelming nightmare begins to take over her life, Rose is forced to face her troubling past in order to survive and escape this maddening horror that is ruining her life.
I won’t go into spoiler-filled details about the story and what’s causing this nightmare chaos, but there’s an interesting story behind it, and I’d love to see that story explored more in a sequel, which this first film definitely sets about.
As for my teenage girls, while the movie scared them to death and made sure they lost some sleep the night we saw the movie, they loved it and wanted me to tell the studio they were asking for a sequel. . So, if anyone from Paramount Pictures is reading this review, you should probably make that sequel.
Smile was written and directed by Parkin Fin, who made his directorial debut with this film and did a great job of telling this story! The film is also the protagonist Jessie T. Usher, Kal Penn, Rob Morgan, Kyle Gallner, Caitlin StaseyAnd Judy Reyes.
If you haven’t seen Smile however, it’s a movie that’s definitely worth a look, especially during this Halloween season.
