The actor Will Smith Back on the networks to announce his new film at the hands of Apple +. The tape is named ’emancipation’, and is based on real events in US history surrounding slavery. Directed by Antonie Fuqua, the film is also produced by Smith, in addition to being part of the cast.

Actor Will Smith returns to the screen in a new film based on true events, produced by Apple Original Films. The film, which will be released in AppleTV + on December 9thit’s called ‘Emancipation’ and tells us a crude passage on the period of slavery that the United States experienced during the civil war in 1893.

The story is based on A letter from Peter Cooper, on the emancipation of slaves, a diary written by Peter (WIll Smith), a slave on the run. History tells us like this man manages to escape from slavery through his wits and love for his family, evading the hunt of his oppressors and the swamps of Louisiana.

The film is also inspired by the 1863 photos of “Whipped Peter”, taken during a medical examination by the Union Army. A well known image, on display Peter’s bare back was mutilated after being whipped of their slaveholders. This also helped to increase public opposition to slavery.

In 2020 Smith said the film’s script moved him to the point of being speechless. This added to the events that took place that year in the United States around the protests over the murder of George Floyd, a man of Afro descent who died violently at the hands of a white police officer.

We’re seeing on the streets right now some of the feelings I’ve had. There is sadness, there is anger, there is love, there is faith and there is also hope for what I see young people doing, “said Will Smith.

The announcement of the film followed an early screening at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st annual legislative conference in Washington, DC. It featured Fuqua, Smith and the curator of American Slavery, along with political and cultural commentator Angela Rye. The film will be released in theaters December 2, 2022.
