It’s been a while since we last had an update on Lethal weapon 5, which has been in development for some years. The last we heard, Mel Gibson he would direct the film and intervene for the delay Richard Donner. He is already ready to act alongside Danny Gloverand he wanted to continue developing the project as “a fitting tribute to his friend and the late director of the franchise.”
Speaking to ScreenRant, Gibson offered an update on the project and confirmed that production has been further delayed due to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. He said:
“The only delay is now with all the changes at Warners, with the arrival of Discovery and the new boss [David Zaslav]. They tear everyone else apart, throw them away and get new people. It always takes time for these companies to reorganize, so it’s been a delay, but I’m pretty confident we’ll get it back on its feet, we’ll probably turn it around in the first quarter of the new year. “
Gibson went on to say they have “a really good script” and “they had a really good model” and shared that he continued working on the script after Donner’s death:
“I had the honor of sitting down with the writer after Richard’s death and doing a couple more drafts and trying to do it in the spirit of what we thought Donner could do. [want] because I knew the boy so well. We tried to get that flavor and were pretty happy with what we came up with. “
Well, I hope Gibson and the creative team really make this movie and bring this next chapter of the Lethal Weapon franchise to life.
Gibson will direct with the blessing of Lauren Shuler Donnerthe wife of the late director. Dan Lin is set to produce the film alongside Shuler Donner, with Gibson now also as producer.
