At the end of last week, Sony’s images announced that they will produce a new one Karate Kid movies for the big screen. They provided a release date in the summer of 2024, but didn’t provide any other information about what the plot or characters would be. Most fans thought the movie would most likely bond Cobra Kaias the show is the main reason for the resurgence of fans, but it turns out that may not be true.
The co-creator of the show Jon Hurwitz was recently asked about the movie on Twitter and he replied:
“The kids and I would like to make movies about Karate Kid and Cobra Kai and hopefully someday they will. But this isn’t from us or focused on the cast of Cobra Kai. I don’t know much, but I wish him well. #Karate Kid #CobraKai“
At the moment, there are no stars or directors related to the film and Hurwitz is not involved in the project. But that leaves fans wondering why they should do a Karate Kid film that does not surround the extremely popular Cobra Kai franchise that took the original Karate Kid characters and followed them into their current lives, weaving new characters in addition to the old ones from the original trilogy. The show is so beautiful and it would be fun to see the creators being able to make a film from what they have made. But I guess Sony is just capitalizing on the franchise’s popularity and maybe just doing a remake? This was done as early as 2010 with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, and while that movie wasn’t bad, the fans overall didn’t care. So I don’t know why a remake now would be different.
But luckily we will have at least one more season of Cobra Kaiand we’ll see what the creators have in store next. Seasons 1-5 of Cobra Kai are now available on Netflix.
