Mexican movies that reflect the reality of society in the country – Netflix (courtesy)
It is said that art is a result of its context, and that, for better or for worse, it is a window to analyze the moment in which each piece stands. That’s why, from the rawest dramas to the most uncomfortable comedies, these are Mexican films that reflect the social reality of the country.
The forgotten
Although director Luis Buñuel was Spanish, and therefore criticized, there is no doubt that ‘The forgotten’ is one of the best Mexican films, and one of those who portray reality like no other. The story (which has undergone attempts at censorship) is about a group of children who, forced by their economic situation, approach crime.
the freedom of the devil
Despite being a documentary, ‘La libertad del diablo’ by Everardo González talks about one of the problems that currently afflicts the country the most, violence. Told through the victims themselves, as well as the authors, all covered in masks, it is an investigation into a palpable crisis throughout Mexico. Available on Netflix.
Herod’s Law
Director Luis Estrada’s trilogy is well known for its portrayal of national politics. ‘Herod’s Law’ is a Mexican comedy about corruption, the abuse of power and, again, violence. Starring Damián Alcázar, Leticia Huijara and Guillermo Gil, this film is available on Netflix.
helicopter
There are not a few people in the country who experience situations that have forced them to migrate, approach organized crime or experience situations of violence. This is what ‘Heli’ is about, a drama directed by Amat Escalante, about the war on drugs, through the eyes of a worker who wants to protect his sister. Available in Filmin.
Your excellence
Directed by Miguel M. Delgado in 1966, and as a parody critique of the Cold War, it is’Your excellence’, a Mexican film starring Cantinflas, which gives birth to a man who becomes ambassador of the Republic of Los Cocos, a position from which he will speak with various world leaders to find a better world. Available in transparent.
Storm
Finally, one of the most immediate crises in the country is that of violence and impunity towards women, portrayed in ‘Tempesta’ by Tatiana Huezo. The story follows the true story of Miriam and Adela, two women with different realities, the first, falsely accused of human trafficking, and the second, in search of their missing daughter. Available on Apple TV.
