More news from D23 Expo, the House of Mouse fan convention taking place right now at the Anaheim Convention Center. During the Walt Disney Studios panel, the same one in which the first trailer of ‘The Little Mermaid’ was presented, The title and release year have also been assigned to the live-action sequel to “The Lion King”: It will be called ‘Mufasa’ and we will see it in 2024.

The film will be directed by Barry Jenkins and will take place in two timelines with Mufasa as a puppy and his rise to the throne of the Pride Lands. Although the images have not been released, the people who attended the panel were able to see a short trailer with surprise included and some reporters, like ComicBook’s Jamie Jirak, described them for fans who couldn’t travel to Los Angeles: “The trailer starts with Mufasa as a puppy.” Not a drop of real blood. “He gets overwhelmed by some water. It ends with Timon and Pumbaa joking:” Aren’t we in this movie? “So … they come out”.

new entries
As has been known for more than a year, in addition to the director, ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ already has protagonists: Aaron Pierre (“The Underground Railroad”, “Time”) will be the young voice of Simba’s father while Kelvin Harrison Jr. (‘A moment in time – Waves’ or’ The trial of the Chicago 7 ‘) will play a new character named Taka (although it looks like he could refer to Scar, as according to the book’ A Tale of Two Brothers’, since 1994 this is the villain’s birth name).

Secondly, Chiwetel Ejiofor will return to embody the adult version of Mufasa as he did in the film directed by Jon Favreau and we can assume that if they appear in the teaser presented at D23 Expo, we will also hear Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen return as Timon and Pumbaa. The screenplay for ‘Mufasa’ is signed by Jeff Nathanson and the original score will again be composed by Hans Zimmer with a theme by Pharrell Williams.
