Joe Wright (Darkest Hour, Atonement) will develop and direct a new historical television drama titled M.which will tell the rise to power of Benito Mussolini. Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, bones and all) is a producer on the series and will be written by Stefano Bises (Gomorrah, The new pope) in collaboration with Davide Serino (1992).

The high-end series will be based on the novel by Antonio Scurati M. Son of the centurywhose history “traces the birth of fascism in Italy and the rise of Mussolini with an innovative approach that sparked the debate on the legacy of the fascist dictator in Italy and abroad”.

The producer of the show Lorenzo Mielihe spoke about the project, saying: “The writer has understood and put on paper, with facts and documents and all, that Mussolini is the boy – he and he alone – who created what we know today as populism and fascism”.

He went on to say: “Fascism is something that interests everyone today. It has been relevant over the past few decades, but is particularly relevant now around the world. And it’s interesting because before Trump the United States and Anglo-Saxon culture thought fascism was something that wasn’t on their radar. But now it is. This is why I thought of an Anglo-Saxon director [for ‘M’]. “

Speaking of Wright directing the series, he said:

More specifically, Mieli thinks Wright is perfect for “M” because “I love the way he approached politics [in ‘Darkest Hour’] and I love the way the genre changes. “He said Wright” fell in love with the material “and is” working in Rome now, dealing with one of the worst and most iconic characters in our history. “

The series will consist of eight episodes and filming will begin shortly at Cinecittà Studios in Rome. The cast is kept under wraps, though Mieli says Mussolini will be played by an A-list talent.
