Of all the announcements that Marvel Studios made during his time at San Diego Comic-Con, not to mention the two episodes of ‘Avengers’ that will close Phase 6, Kevin Feige surprised Hall H by announcing that a movie of the ‘Lightning’. The clearest comparison would be It would be the ‘Suicide Squad’ of the UCM: characters who aren’t heroes, but who aren’t exactly bad eitherunited by a mission.
Marvel has only confirmed the title of the film, the release date and that it will be in charge of closing Phase 5 of the UCM, but nothing more. We don’t know who will make up the teamalthough from what we saw in Step 4 we can get an idea of who the main candidates are.
Deadline reporter Justin Kroll recently dropped an interesting bombshell on The Town podcast: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) will be the leader of the Thunderbolts. It’s something that would make sense: we already saw her in the movie “Black Widow”, where she showed a connection with Valentina, the character of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and who strongly aims to be the Nick Fury of the Thunderbolts. Yelena returned to the MCU in “Hawkeye” in order to connect even more characters who are between good and evil. Echo (Alaqua Cox), for example, could very well be another member. And it’s true that Florence Pugh is at a fairly high level of fame (if the drama with ‘Don’t worry, dear’ doesn’t go any further) and it would even be divine justice to make Natasha’s sister shine above her peers.

The reporter also takes the opportunity to release a couple of names that would also be part of ‘Thunderbolts’: John Walker, also known as US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl). The former is not surprising because we also saw him being recruited by Valentina, and the latter became a recurring character in the shady events of the MCU, so he earned that spot as well.
In any case, all of this information must be taken as a mere possibility because Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything yet. Maybe they will tell us something at the D23 Expo which starts on September 9th? For now, it marks July 26, 2024, the release date of “Thunderbolts”, on the calendar.
