Autism or Asperger’s syndrome are disorders whose representation in the narrative has evolvedfrom emblematic titles such as ‘Rain Man’ or ‘Mary and Max’ to more current representations that have tried to offer a different face, from a more social perspective, such as the French ‘Specials’ or the Israeli ‘Always with you’, or who tries to break down prejudices, like the series “The good doctor”, “It’s okay not to be well” or the recent “Woo, extraordinary lawyer”. From a smaller perspective, now comes ‘El radioaficionado’, the first feature film by Iker Elorrietawhich opens in commercial theaters after passing through the Zinemira section of the 69th San Sebastian Film Festival.

Elorrieta tells the protagonist’s desire to fulfill his wishes. The film is set in seemingly safe territory, as Nicolás, the protagonist, creates radio masts, has a job and lives with his aunt, while mourning the death of his recently deceased mother. Then take advantage of a vacation to return to the country of his father, who also passed away several years ago, to fulfill two wishes: learn more about the radio signals with which sailors communicate, about his father’s profession and throw his mother’s ashes into the sea.
The plot would seem conventional, were it not because an adult who is under guardianship and must be moderately supervised. That’s where the story begins. Apparently, Elorrieta tries to claim the independence of a man who has autism, as well as showing the importance of a peaceful environment to develop that autonomy. However, the director never ceases to pose a series of obstacles which, far from highlighting the ability to live alone, cause the negative effect.

Concrete portrait of a person with autism spectrum disorder
From there, that the intentions of “El radioaficionado” are not entirely clear. Yes, it is clear that, while creating safe environments, part of society is hostile towards those who are different. However, Elorrieta reveals her protagonist’s desire for autonomy, pushing the character to the limit of her, accompanied by an old friend, Ane, who does not turn out to be a good influence and leaves the question to what extent the addiction is more to the person being cared for or the caregiver.
This makes “El radioaficionado” have a good approach, but it doesn’t go further. In fact, it causes the paradoxical negative effect, as it shows that every person with autism spectrum disorder is a world and that, on certain occasions, there must be the protection of the individual, who must be supervised to continue in a safe environment in which you can gradually gain that independence. As a feature film debut, it only works halfway for that reason. However, Thanks to the interpretation of its protagonist, an accurate Falco Cabo, the film leaves a resolution that invites reflection and a certain hope.
Note: 6
The best: The interpretation of Falco Cabo.
Worse: He ends up staying in a no man’s land and with a message that goes against his initial approach.
