Cathy Yan (Birds of prey, Dead pigs) will direct and produce an adaptation of the live-action series of Yasutaka Tsutsui ‘1993 novel Paprika for Amazon Studios.
Paprika it is described as a “character-driven science fiction series with a mind-blowing narrative centered around a technology that allows us to invade people’s dreams.” Yes, Christopher Nolan was clearly inspired by Paprika when he made it Start.
Legendary Japanese animator Satoshi Kon previously adapted the book into a critically acclaimed anime film in 2006. There has been talk of a live action adaptation from 2009, and at one point Wolfgang Peterson (The Neverending Story, Troy) was commissioned to direct a film.
In the story “Dr. Atsuko Chiba works as a scientist by day and, under the code name “Paprika”, is a dream detective by night. Atsuko and her colleagues are working on a device called the DC Mini, which is meant to help psychiatric patients, but in the wrong hands it could destroy people’s minds. When a prototype is stolen, Atsuko / Paprika takes action to retrieve it before the damage is done. “
I was not a big fan of Yan Birds of preybut I hope he manages to create a fantastic adaptation of the series Paprika. This is supposed to be a great series. We just have to see how it handles the source material.
Yan will write and direct a feature film entitled The Refreshment. What do you think of Yan tackling the live-action adaptation of Paprika?
