Michele Mannthe director of films like The last of the Mohicans, HeatAnd Warranty, recently shared his thoughts on modern action movies and doesn’t seem impressed with them. In fact, he says he’s bored of it.
In a recent interview with Total Film, the director was talking about developing his own film adaptation Heat prequel / sequel novel. When asked why not adapt it as a TV series, he said:
“There is fantastic work on television and, for whatever reason, it has a short half-life. Dino De Laurentiis once told me about television: ‘Michael, there is a small screen and there is a large screen.’ . Having said all that, you know? “
He went on to explain why he prefers the swamp screen, saying:
“I’m not putting the television down. It really is [a golden age]. But the great cinematic experience – there’s nothing like it. When we screened Heat at the Academy, probably 80% of the audience had never seen it on the big screen and the reaction was amazing. I had the entire cast there and Chris Nolan moderated it. It’s on Blu-ray – we had a panel discussion afterwards. It was really fascinating for me to see the difference and the impact. “
As Mann went on to talk, he talked about how impressed he is with modern action movies:
“I’m just bored with that. It’s not very interesting. I mean, sometimes the choreography is so outrageous it’s fascinating and it’s good enough. But in general it’s not. It’s just stale.”
While John Wick and some foreign films are doing great and unique things with the action, I agree with him. Most of the action we see in movies these days is pretty stale. I also see it in Marvel projects. Much of the action they are doing is repetitive and boring and whenever an action sequence begins, I’m ready for it to end so we can get back to the story.
I think action is at its best when action sequences really help move the story forward, and it’s not just inserted to fit an action scene into a movie.
What do you think of what Mann said about being bored with modern action movies?
