
Horror movies based on books that are not “IT” or any Stephen King novel (universal)
It has become quite common for horror movies based on the books of stephen king, are the only ones known to be adaptations of novels. However, there is much more horror cinema that has brought great literary works of the genre to the big screen that are worth seeing.
The exorcist
One of the most classic horror films is William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” and is based on the book of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The book that was successful in the 1970s is also inspired by a real event: the exorcism he performed on a 14-year-old boy in the 1940s and which was reported by the Washington Post. It’s on HBO Max.
The silence of the lambs
Jonathan Demme’s acclaimed film, ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, is also one of the book-based psychological horror movies. In this case, the film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris, who is the author of the entire saga of Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), who also managed to bring it to the big screen and make films a success. Among the most classic literary works of terror is Bram Stroker’s ‘Dracula’ and it is one of the novels of the genre that has had more adaptations on the big and small screen. The most famous and acclaimed is ‘Bram Stroker’s Dracula’, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring a renowned cast such as Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. Psychosis
Another great classic of psychological horror based also on a book is ‘Psycho’, the great film by Alfred Hitchcock is inspired by the homonymous novel by Robert Blotch. He is one of the Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam and Janet Leigh is one of those who have caused the most impact, chills and controversy since it came out in theaters. Ringu
Between classic horror movies based on novels also highlights ‘Ringu’, the terrifying Japanese film directed by Hideo Nakata which adapts the book of the same name written by the also Japanese author, Kōji Suzuki. The popularity and acclaim he received after reaching the big screen allowed him to create the El Aro saga and create a whole chilling franchise. It’s on Tubi, Vix and Pluto TV.
The seed of the devil
Also known as ‘Rose Mary’s Baby’, Roman Polanski’s ‘Devil’s Seed’ is another god film adaptations of horror books. In her case, it’s based on the literary work of the same name by Ira Levin and although the novel made a lot of impact when it was released, the film starring Mia Farrow sparked much more fury and spread horror with its controversial story about the son of the devil. It’s on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV +.
