After the success of ‘The Invisible Agent’, the Russo brothers have a new project on Netflix: ‘The Electric State’, the adaptation of the homonymous graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, also author of ‘Tales from the Loop’. To star in the film, the directors had already hired Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt and just added two pieces of names to the cast: Michelle Yeoh and Stanley Tucci, two actors who, like them, have crossed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Yeoh in ‘Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings’ and Tucci in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’. Additionally, we will also see Jason Alexander in the film and hear Jenny Slate and Brian Cox in the vocals only.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are currently working on the script. assiduous collaborators of the directors, who have already written ‘Avengers: Endgame’. When the Russos went ahead with the project, back in 2017, they only thought about producing it and in 2019 they would have Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti behind the cameras, but since then things have changed and they will be the ones to direct it.

What is it about?

“The Electric State” tells the story of a girl and her robot companion who travel with a homeless eccentric through the fictional state of Pacifica, in a retro-futuristic alternative version of the western United States, looking for his brother. Millie Bobby Brown will play the protagonist, Michelle, and it is unknown who will play Pratt, but considering that he will be the voice of Super Mario and Garfield, some media theorize that he could be the voice of Michelle’s robot, Skip.

Universal originally bought the rights to what was Stålenhag’s third book, but the high cost of production meant they ended up in Netflix’s hands. Its budget is estimated to be around $ 200 million. As part of his book campaign, Stålenhag has produced and released an electronic music album of the same title for his Kickstarter supporters, which we don’t know if it will be used in the Russos’ film. “The Electric State” doesn’t have a release date on Netflix, but production is expected to begin this fall.
