Groot’s death in 2014 in “Guardians of the Galaxy” was a blow to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What they didn’t expect was that this sacrifice would bring them one of the best characters in the entire saga as a reward. Baby Groot fell in love in the Guardians sequel and is now back with more pranks in “I am Groot”, an animated spin-off series. With only 5 episodes lasting about 3-4 minutes, the most adorable character of the House of Ideas lands on Disney + to conquer the little ones and make them laugh.

“He is the child we all have inside”ensures in an interview for eCartelera the director Kirsten Lepore, director, screenwriter and executive producer of the series, “and besides, it has this simple and universal face, it’s eyes and mouth. It’s like a big emoji”. That Baby Groot’s ease in conveying emotions was the main ingredient that made him successful at the time, but so was his delinquent attitude. “It reminds you of your childhood because you say ‘oh, I was like that, sometimes a good boy and sometimes a bad boy'”Lepore also points out.

For Brad Winderbaum, executive producer of “I Am Groot” and head of streaming production at Marvel Studios, “the character is a boy of few words”something that opened the doors for him to have a comedy series and in short film format. “When we thought about doing a series on Baby Groot, we immediately thought about the format of the short film”invoice. Interestingly, despite the entire series being just 20 minutes long, Lepore states this “The overall process took us a year and a half or two”.

Animation, unlimited power

“I am Groot” is also the second Marvel animated series for its UCM after “What if …?”. “Animation is an infinite canvas”Winderbaum comments, defining it as “a direct line to the director’s imagination”. In fact, at La Casa de las Ideas they ended up so happy with the result that they are already preparing a second batch of five more episodes, as announced during the latest Comic Con in San Diego.

‘I am Groot’ will debut August 10 on Disney +.
