In addition to the third season of “Euphoria”, Sam Levinson has “The Idol” series in development.a new drama starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp starring BLACKPINK’s Jennie, which is expected to hit streaming platforms in the coming months.
The first time “The Idol” was known was in 2020, when it was announced that The Weeknd would produce and star in the series with Sam Levinson directing in collaboration with studio A24. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed who would join the cast, such as Lily-Rose Depp and Jennie Kim of the K-pop group BLACKPINK; among a few other details on its production.

Though it wasn’t until mid-2022 when the first trailer for “The Idol” was revealed, in which a glimpse of the kind of story the drama series would tell was given: The Weeknd becomes cult leader and Lily -Rose Depp in a rising musical artist who “falls” surrendered at his feet.
Fortunately, the story wasn’t the only thing that was revealed with the trailer. The advance also confirmed that HBO would be the distribution channel for this new series by Sam Levinson and like other productions of the said brand such as “Euphoria” and “Game of Thrones”, it is estimated that “The Idol” will premiere on HBO Max.
“The Idol” doesn’t have a release date yet
Unfortunately, the release date for “The Idol” was not confirmed in the series trailer; but there are speculations that point to the possibility that the six chapters that make up the drama with The Weeknd and Lily Rose Depppremiered on the HBO Max streaming platform by late 2022 or early 2023.
If “The Idol” were to be released in 2023, its launch dynamics could completely change and, eventually, there would be a possibility that HBO Max won’t be the streaming platform it reaches. This is due to changes that were recently announced on said digital service following the merger of Warner Bros with Discovery which turned them into a single company.

Although, on the other hand, Warner Bros Discovery has announced that it wants to push all HBO projects, then “The Idol” would have a chance to premiere on this company’s new streaming platform if it doesn’t reach the original HBO Max service. .
