Now that the new Netflix adaptation, based on the DC comics and written by Neil Gaiman, has been released, many doubts have arisen among new fans of ‘The Sandman’. And with such a large and complex work, his characters hide some details that you should know before watching the series.

Morpheus

The protagonist of both the comic and the Netflix series is Morpheus, played by Tom Sturridge in ‘The man of sand’, and which is also known as Sueño, Dream or El Rey de los Sueños. One of the Eternals, brothers who represent the most important concepts of life and who reign over existence itself.

Lucifer

Known as Lucifer, the morning star, this character is played by Gwendoline Christie, famous for appearing in “Game of Thrones” and “Star Wars”. Although he is the same incarnation of the Netflix series with Tom Ellis, in “The Sandman” he has nothing to do with his previous portrayal. Also, in Neil Gaiman’s comic he was a man, while in his adaptation he chose to switch genres.

Roderick Burgess

In the comic “The Sandman”, Roderick Burgess is the Supreme Wizard of the Order of the Ancient Mysteries, also known as The Demon King. Unlike the original story, where he only wants to achieve power and immortality, in the Netflix series he intends to summon and capture Death, to bring back his son, but instead imprisons Morpheus.

Giovanna Costantino

Another of the characters who changed gender in ‘The man of sand’ It was from Giovanna Costantino, portrayed by Jenna Coleman, and who has previously been played by Keanu Reeves and Matt Ryan. However, in the series it appears that he is quite a descendant of the family, and at some point the original John appears to have existed.

Death

Probably one of the best known characters outside the original novel is that of Death, played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste in ‘The man of sand’from Netflix. She is the sister of Morpheus, and another of the Eternals, who, although she seems the cruelest of brothers, is actually the one who cares to hear and understand the history of humans.

Corinthian

Played by Boyd Holbrook of “Logan” and “Narcos” fame, Corinthus is a creation of Morpheus, a nightmare who escapes into the waking world and wears dark glasses to hide the fact that he has teeth instead of eyes. Already in the real world, he is a serial killer just for the sake of killing.
