Exclusive: Germany has long been a powerhouse in football (also known as soccer), winning four World Cups between 1954 and 2014. Now the country is developing a taste for American football.
Germany has its own American football league, the GFL. Teams include the Munich Cowboys (not to be confused with the Dallas Cowboys), the Berlin Rebels, the Dresden Monarchs and the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns from a small town near Munich. When we say small, consider this: Green Bay, Wisconsin, home of the NFL Packers, is twice the size of Schwäbisch Hall.
These artists are the subject of a new documentary. City of unicornsDirected by Nick Alfieri, a college football player who attended USC film school before dressing up to play for the German Unicorns. Gravitas Ventures, a unit of Anthem Sports and Entertainment, has acquired the worldwide rights to the documentary, according to Deadline. GV plans to release the film in theaters and on demand on August 19th.
Carolina Panthers star Christian McCaffrey is among the executive producers of the documentary along with Andrew Carlberg, Paul Pawlowski and Paul Monusky of NFL Films. Produced by Brent Kraft, Sven Loeffler and Nick Alfieri; Danny Hamui, Matthew Nemeth and Natasya Eckerstrom are the co-executive producers.
“Years of making this film have been a labor of love,” Alfieri said in a statement. “I am very excited that the public can experience the incredible world of American football in Europe, as well as the inspiring culture of the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, in this underdog story.”
Brett Rogalski, head of acquisitions at Gravitas Ventures, negotiated the deal with Andrew Carlberg on behalf of the filmmakers. Rogalski commented in the statement:City of unicorns is an incredibly interesting documentary about football abroad with a lot of heart. This is a film that sports fans will not want to miss. “
Several American-born players compete for the Unicorns alongside Alfieri, including defensive end Devin Benton and wide receiver Tyler Ruttenbeck. They appear in the film, as well as former Unicorn manager Sigi Gerke, who ran the club for 26 years. City of unicorns To witness the challenges of the team that tries to keep up with the key clubs of the market in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and the aforementioned Berlin, Munich and Dresden.
“Football is on the rise in Germany,” observes the film’s narrative, “but small-town unicorns may be left behind.”
Not only has Germany embraced the game, but some of its terminology is inescapable. If you are interested, Google Translate offers these useful translations:
“He scored a field goal” = Er hat ein Field Goal geschossen
“He scored many touchdowns” = Er hat viele Touchdowns erizelt
You’re welcome (gerne geschehen).
