The beloved longtime TV star Nicola Nichols she died at the age of 89. She in the original she played the able and imposing crew member of the Enterprise Nyota Uhura Star Trek series and the first six “Trek” films. He also voiced the character in “Star Trek: The Animated Series”.
Nichols was a pioneer and a big fan icon, being one of the first black stars on screen and sharing one of the first interracial kisses on television with the co-star. William Shatnerwho shared the following sentiment about his friend on Twitter:
“I’m so sorry for Nichelle’s disappearance. She was a beautiful woman and she played an admirable character who did a lot to redefine social issues both here in the United States and around the world. I will definitely miss you. I send my love and condolences to her family. Invoice”
Other Trekking co-star, Giorgio Takeiissued a statement, saying:
“I’ll have more to say about the pioneer and incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lieutenant Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who died today at the age of 89. For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes they shine like the stars between which you now rest, my dearest friend.
Celia Rose Goodingwho plays Uhura in the new Paramount + series Star Trek: Strange New Worldspaid tribute to the actress who gave rise to the role:
“It made room for so many of us. She reminded me that not only can we reach the stars, but that our influence is essential for their survival. Forget about shaking the table, she built it! #RIPNichelleNichols“
They are joined by many other friends and fans who have taken to social media to remember Nichols today. Her son, Kyle Johnson, released the following statement on the actress’s official Facebook page:
“Last night my mother, Nichelle Nichols, died of natural causes. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn and inspire. Her life was lived well and as such a model for all of us ”.
She will be fondly remembered and her role will live on in our homes and hearts.
