‘Pearl’: first trailer and poster for the prequel to ‘X’ about the origins of the character of Mia Goth

‘X’ was one of the horror films of the year. Under the aegis of A24, the Ti West-directed film hit the box office, audiences and critics alike with a 70s-set slasher and a group of porn industry insiders eager to record a movie. Unfortunately, not everything goes the way they wanted, because their guests, an elderly couple, don’t like what they are doing. In the movie, Mia Goth played her character (Maxine Minx)a young cocaine addict who aspires to be the next porn star in the world, and the old left character (Pearl)under kilos of prosthetics and make-up.

A24’s new bet is geared towards a sequel that explains how that old decrepit but still passionate has become what it has become. ‘Pearl’, the prequel to ‘X’ also directed by West and starring Goth, has released a new trailer which delves into the origins of the Catholic grandmother with a much younger version.

Set in 1918, “Pearl” shows us the Goth character totally desperate to get out. As with Maxine in ‘X’, Pearl wants to conquer the world and become a star, but at the time of World War I it was frowned upon for a young girl to abandon her family.. The trailer shows us how, despite being oppressed by herself, Pearl decides to sign up for casting and will kill everyone who gets in her way, be it eggs, ducks or people. ‘Pearl’ also delves into, like ‘X’, the conservatism of the time and how kissing or sex managed to break into a still very puritanical and religious society.

Last March, the actress already told Entertainment Weekly how excited she was about working with Ti West. “I’ve been a big fan of yours for a long time. “The Devil’s House” is one of my favorite horror films. before finishing the script [de ‘X’] I already knew it was something I wanted to be a part of”. The cast is completed by David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland and Emma Jenkins-Purro. The film, which also released the first official poster, will be released in US theaters on September 16.

An ‘X’ saga?

As the Los Angeles Times revealed when “X” premiered, A24’s plans with West’s film went far beyond a mere slasher. The director revealed that the prequel was covertly shot shortly after filming “X” during the pandemic, although his intentions are to shoot a trilogy with which to complete his work.. If it were realized, we would be talking about the first saga of A24, a production company known for its films in their own right far from the sequels.

With the same Goth who co-wrote this new installment, “Pearl” will have a different tone than its predecessor. While “X” has picked up the influences of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series, this prequel will be a blend of Douglas Sirk’s turn-of-the-century melodrama with the Technicolor of “Mary Poppins” of a twisted and insane Disney second to the West.
