The long-gestating animated film adaptation of Eric Powell ‘S. The gorilla is finally moving forward. The film was in development at 20th Century Fox, but after Disney bought them, the project fell apart in the studio. Well, during Comic-Con this weekend Tim Miller of Blur Studios announced that the film is in development at Netflix and Patrick Osborne (Party), directs the feature film.
The gorilla is based on the long-running action-horror-comedy comic series of the same name, and Powell has been trying to make this film for over a decade.
Clancy Brown And Paolo Giamatti they were originally chosen as the two main characters of the story. Brown was cast in the role of The Goon and Giamatti was cast in the role of Frankie. Here is the synopsis:
The story is about the adventures of the Goon, a muscular brawler who claims to be the main hitman of the feared mobster Labrazio. The Goon (and his partner Franky) are often involved in other machinations, often in connection with the evil zombie gangs under the command of the Nameless Zombie Priest. The series has a decidedly paranormal slant, with the average story of ghosts, ghouls, smelly monkeys with an unnatural hunger for cake, extra-dimensional aliens and mad scientists.
Speaking earlier on the development of the film, Miller shared:
Hey, Goon fans. We know it’s been a long time between updates and we apologize. We suck. BUT FINALLY … we have some news. As you read in the latest update, we had a setback with the Disney and Fox merger … but we’ve never stopped trying to take the Goon forward on other avenues since then. And one of them finally led us to … NETFLIX!
It’s a great place for adult animation and we’ve long enjoyed a great relationship thanks to LOVE, DEATH + ROBOT. They are excellent people who love animation and we are thrilled that Goon has found a home there.
ALSO, I am personally EXCITED to introduce myself, Patrick Osborne, as the newest member of the Goon Movie team and the new captain at the helm! Working with the Blur in Love Death and Robots team directing Exit Strategies has been a joy, and I’m looking forward to working with Tim, Jeff and Eric to create something special. I have loved The Goon for a long time. There are no such comic series and I can’t wait to make an equally unique film out of it. Eric and I have already started digging. We are focused on molding the script into something fantastic – true to comics – something no one has ever seen on screen before.
Seriously … thank you everyone for keeping the faith. We hope to have more information soon, but until then – EYE KNIFE! Patrick and BLUR
