Hasbro recently announced an interesting platform that will be added to the Hasbro Pulse mobile app this fall. The Hasbro Selfie series will essentially allow you to take a picture of your face and wear it on a collectible 6-inch action figure featuring costumes from their top brands, including GI JOE, ghost BusterWonder, Power RangersAnd Star Wars. This is possible thanks to Hasbro’s proprietary software and partnership with Formlabs. If you attend San Diego Comic-Con, you may be one of the first to check out the new Hasbro Self Series, and a select few may even be the first to create and purchase their figures. Speaking of this new adventure, Brian Chapman from Hasbro said:

We are super excited to dive into the world of personalization and personalization with the Hasbro Selfie Series. We’ve done extensive research to truly understand fan demand for a custom product, and the team has done a fantastic job of making that dream a reality. The innovation on this proprietary technology is truly remarkable and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to join their collections.

Hasbro Selfie Series offers us a new way to interact with fans. We’re just scratching the surface when it comes to customization, and we’re excited to see where this innovative new platform will take us.

I have many thoughts on this. For starters, they don’t mention the cost of this in the press release. This has always worried me a little. I can 100% see this is Hasbro charging an arm and a leg. Secondly, I don’t think Hasbro has the best track record with face sculpting. Sometimes they do it right, but I feel like (at least with Power Rangers) most of the time the faces seem a little (or more, depending on the character) dull. Based on the shared images, these don’t look much better overall. There are also privacy issues to consider.

All that negativity out there, I think this is really cool too. I know I’ve dreamed of being the Red Ranger since I was about four, and that would have allowed me to have a Red Ranger action figure with my face on it. A plethora of fans will love it for this reason. Many of us have dreamed of being certain characters or in specific roles and that helps fuel that dream just a little bit.

What do you think? Is it a nightmare waiting to unfold or something really interesting?
