Lucasfilm has announced a new book to be released titled The princess and the scoundreland is set immediately after the events of Return of the Jedi. Indeed, it picks up in the wake of the Battle of Endor, when a conflicting princess Leia talks to Luke about Darth Vader after he burns Vader’s body.
As you know, Leia Organa learned that Darth Vader was her father towards the end of Return of the Jedi, but the film never really explored his reaction to that. This new story will.
StarWars.com shared an excerpt from the book, which reveals that she can’t understand why her brother Luke Skywalker so easily accepts that Vader is their close relative. He can’t help but think about the interrogation he underwent at Vader’s hand A new hopeand ultimately attributes their differing attitudes to the fact that “Luke was never tortured by their biological father like she did.”
Here is a small piece of the excerpt that was shared to give you an idea of what was going through Leia’s mind:
“How are you?” Luke’s voice was sincere, but Leia didn’t know how to answer him. It was supposed to be a triumph, but everything she really felt was confused. Not just about what Luke had told her about her lineage: their connection was something she’d felt for a long time and it had been easy to accept Luke about her as her brother. She wouldn’t have thought about what it meant to her biological father. No, it wasn’t just that.
“It’s the Force, isn’t it?” Luca asked.
Leia nodded. She had told Luke that she didn’t understand – she couldn’t – understand the power she had over her, but he seemed strangely calm and confident that she I could he actually handles the Force as he did. Leia might not have a real experience with the Force, but there was no denying the power Luke had … the power she felt too, like the flapping of a fly’s wings just at the edge of her consciousness. Waiting for her to grab it.
“He told me to tell you …” Luke began, but Leia’s head snapped up, her eyes fierce as she stared at him.
“Don’t do that,” he warned.
“Those were his last words. He wanted me to tell you … “
“I do not care.”
“He was good, ”Luke insisted. “There was still some good in him, after all …”
My father was good, thought Leia, but in her mind she imagined Bail Organa, not Darth Vader. Thinking of Bail about her made her think of Breha, her mother. Of her house. Of all that she had lost.
When she spoke to Luke that night, Leia told him she remembered the mother they shared, their birth mother. They had been vague images, feelings, really, nothing more. But she done to have a memory – of love, of closeness, of things he could not describe. It was impossible to put into words his feelings about her, but their truth could not be denied. It felt like … a connection, a bond made of light.
Yet Luke, who was a Force-strong Jedi Knight, had no memory of the woman who had fathered them both.
Did he have memories of his father? Was that why he was so able to forgive the monster that was Darth Vader? They had been separated at birth, not just from each other but from their biological parents. Maybe Leia had a bond with her mother and Luke had a bond with her father.
Leia held back a bitter laugh. Maybe it wasn’t that deep. Maybe it was simply that Luke had never been tortured by their biological father like she was.
Yes, I’m with Leia on this one. It has always been difficult for me to see Darth Vader as a good person because he has done so many unforgivable things! Sure, he saved his son, but he’s his son! Wicked people also love their children. Anyway, is this a novel you would be interested in ready?
