He’s taking it easy. After publishing the fifth novel “A Song of Ice and Fire” in 2011, entitled “Dance of Dragons”, and after the premiere in the same year of the HBO series based on his saga, George RR Martin has promised that the sixth chapter , ‘winter winds’, was arriving. However, more than ten years have passed and it has not yet seen the light.
Thanks to his website, where he usually publishes personal texts to keep his readers updated, we know that Martin is still working on the sixth book in the saga. In his latest post, published on Friday, July 8, the author revealed new details on ‘Winds of Winter’, which according to him is taking him on a different path than the HBO serieswhich ended in 2019.

“I worked at my conservatory”says Martino. “Some things grow … and change. Things turn, change, new ideas come to me (thanks muse), old ideas are useless. I write, rewrite, restructure, break everything and rewrite, go through doors that lead nowhere and others that have wonders on the other side “. And he clarifies: “Yup, many of the things you saw in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” you will also see in “The Winds of Winter” (although perhaps not in the same way) … but much of the rest will be very different “. The American writer had already anticipated that the two remaining books will follow their own path and, although they will coincide in many stages with the series (for which he himself has provided the guidelines to follow in recent seasons, when they have gone beyond the books), it will fork into many others, as he himself confirms.
Without giving specific details, Martin explains one of those ways the books will be separated from the series: “One thing I can say, in general terms and without spoilers, is that not all characters who survived until the end of “Game of Thrones” will survive until the end of “A Song of Ice and Fire”. (Some yes, sure. Sure. Maybe most. But definitely not all.) (Of course I might change my mind next week or with the next chapter I write) “.
It’s the end?
After eight seasons, the ending of “Game of Thrones” proved unsatisfactory (to put it mildly) for most viewers. Since then, a very frequent question that Martin receives is if the outcome of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, which will come one day (or so we suppose) with the seventh novel, ‘Spring Dream’, will be the same as in the series. On this, the author says the following: “An architect might give you a simple, short and concise answer, but I’m more of a gardener. My stories grow, evolve and change as I write them. I usually know where I’m going, of course … the final destinations, the big ones. battles, everything has been in my head for years, decades in the case of “A Song of Ice and Fire.” There is a lot of hell in the details, yes, and sometimes the ground changes under my feet as the words come out. “.
While we continue to wait for the release of ‘The Winds of Winter’, the saga will continue on HBO with the prequel ‘The House of the Dragon’, which opens on August 22. And in addition, other spin-offs are already underway, including a sequel focusing on Jon Snow.
