Taika Wiaiti should develop the next Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, but keeps saying he hasn’t had an idea yet. At one point, he joked about making a movie about Chewbacca’s grandmother, and he recently expanded on those comments in an interview with Rolling Stone and said he’ll never be able to please the. Star Wars fan:
“I saw someone on Twitter saying, ‘I’d really like to see a movie about Chewbacca’s grandmother’, and I thought, I shouldn’t have said that because it’s great! But I just want me, I’ll never satisfy the fans. You know, I don’t want to. joking with something that is so precious. ”
The director goes on to say that while making a Star Wars movie dealing with existing traditions and characters you have to do a lot of research, and just don’t have time for research:
“Besides, you feel like you have to do a lot of research … and I don’t have time. [Laughs] I mean, there are thousands of books that have been written, these volumes of Star Wars books with all those characters. I just don’t have time to get over them. So I can’t say how, you know, for sure, I’d be able to do something that’s very close to what everyone knows. I’m not promising that I won’t do anything like that. I’m just saying, it would be easier for me not to. Would you like to see a Jar Jar Binks movie? “
Waititi previously talked about his plans to expand the Star Wars universe, saying, “Look, I think for the Star Wars the universe to expand, it must expand. I don’t think I’m of any use in the Star Wars universe making a movie where everyone says “Oh great, well, this is the Millennium Falcon project, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.” This is all by itself, it’s great, although I’d like to take something new and create new characters and expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story. “
Now, while Waititi is developing this film, he is well aware of leaving Lucasfilm Star Wars film project and says that it could very well happen to him too saying: “if it’s not right, it’s not right”.
