Pride Month has always been a time of celebration for the LGBTQ community and its allies. As pride has evolved, the film and television industry has also evolved in terms of queer media.
My first reference to queer stories was movies like Cheryl Dunier’s. watermelon woman and Sally Potter orlando. I don’t think these movies were labeled weird back then, but now they are. At the same time, narratives of queer pride came from Ilene Chaiken on television. the word me and Ron Cowen queer as a people. While all were groundbreaking in their own time, many lacked the variety and engagement that viewers seek in the content they consume.
The last five years have seen tremendous growth in queer stories, characters and aesthetics. It’s not just about the stories we see, it’s about the people who have the power to tell them. TV shows like Steven Canals exposureFor example, he had an idea in front of and behind the camera. Casting directors are actively seeking LGBTQ+ actors and actresses to direct movies and TV shows, and for a variety of media, not just queer stories.
While the situation is improving, there is still a long way to go before reaching capital. To discuss the issues plaguing queer media, I created a panel of talented people to discuss how we can get there. These people care about where things are going and aim to create a safe space for those stories and those who want to tell them.
Before watching the video chat above, read the panelists to find out why I chose them and what they contributed to Hollywood and society.
