
Russell Crowe is destined to star in a supernatural horror thriller titled The exorcist of the popewhich is commanded by Giulio Averythe director of that crazy World War II monster movie, Gentleman.
Crowe will take on the role of a real character Father Gabriele Amorth, “a priest who acted as the Vatican’s chief exorcist and who performed more than 100,000 exorcisms in his life.” He died in 2016 at the age of 91. Amorth wrote two memoirs entitled An exorcist tells his storyAnd An exorcist: other storieswhich detailed his “experiences in the battle against the demons that had trapped people in their evil.”
It looks like he’s going to create a fascinating movie and a great role for Crowe. Avery said in a statement, “Working with Russell was my goal. To collaborate with him on the fantastic The exorcist of the pope it’s really a dream come true ”.
The current script is written by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Snake eyes, The wicked) with revisions by Chuck MacLean. Which in turn is based on Michele Petroni- original drafts revised by Chester Hastings And R. Dean McCreary.
Screen Gems is producing the film and previously acquired the rights to the life of the chief exorcist, which also included the rights to Amorth’s two best-selling books internationally. Those books are filled with detailed accounts of his exorcism exploits around the world.
Production on the film will begin in September in Ireland.
