Why was Keanu Reeves canceled? China removes all of the actor’s films

Although he is currently one of the most loved Hollywood actors by fans, in China Keanu Reeves has been banned from the territory, and the fact is that the Chinese government has canceled the actor, and not only, because they have also eliminated ‘John Wick’ and all the movies it appears in, from streaming platforms.

It all starts at the beginning of this 2022, when Keanu Reeves has positioned himself in favor of Tibet at a public event, causing annoyance to the Chinese government for its comments. According to information from the Los Angeles Times, China has canceled, vetoed and ultimately eliminated much of the filmography of the protagonist of ‘The Matrix’ in its territory.

Total, China has removed 19 Keanu Reeves films, including ‘John Wick’, and now they are no longer on the platform of Tencent Video, the largest entertainment company in the world and the one that regulates content entering the region. However, “Toy Story 3”, in which Reeves voices one of the characters, remains, albeit without his name in the credits.

To celebrate the 35th annual Tibet House concert, Keanu Reeves appeared, along with other stars such as Cindy Lauper, Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson, among others. There, some Chinese nationalist groups organized protests against the event, to show their denial of Tibet’s independence.

Other platforms that have removed Keanu Reeves movies

In addition to Tencent Video, China has ordered that Keanu Reeves movies be removed from other streaming platforms in the territory, such as Youku, Migu, Bilibili, Xigua Video and iQiyi. So now it is nearly impossible to see a tape of the protagonist of “John Wick” except by illegal means.

At the moment we do not know the details on which were those 19 Keanu Reeves films that have been banned in China, however it is expected that more information will be shared in the coming days, or that the actor himself will make some statements about it.
