Earlier this year it was announced that Disney + was producing a new series inspired by the classic 1980s movie The Goonies titled Our time. The story centers on a teacher who helps her students recreate the Richard Donner-direct movie The Goonies blow by blow.
The series is produced by Gail Berman and in a recent interview, he shared some new information about the project and how the concept was inspired by a film based on the true story of a group of kids who went on a journey to create a shot-for-shot remake of Lucasfilm. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Berman told Variety:
“This is a collaboration between me, Amblin and Lauren Shuler Donner. When I was at Paramount, there were these guys making this movie about Raiders of the Lost Ark, a shot by shot remake. At the time there was a bit of press and the studio was very upset, I thought it was an amazing idea, and it always stuck in my head: how can you take an idea like that and turn it into a TV series? “
Warner Bros. loved the idea and signed for the crew using the film’s rights. The producers entered Sarah Watson to create and develop the series. Berman went on to offer some additional details over the series Friday night lights:
“We needed a great writer and great partners, so we brought the idea to Amblin and those guys loved it. Sarah Watson is our creator. The series is the story of a city and a family in the lens. from Friday night lights, and inside they tell the story of a remake of The Goonies. We had to go to Warner Bros., to Toby Emmerich, and ask if we could have the rights. They said yes, of course, because of Mr. Spielberg and the Donners. Now we’re doing it for Disney Plus. “
When the project was initially announced, Clancy Collins Whiteexecutive vice president and chief of development said:
“Sarah worked tirelessly to deliver this amazing script, we got our chart read and then the world closed for COVID. So we came back many months later and finished the beautiful pilot, and it was an amazing cast, but unfortunately. A little too young for Fox. And so we just gave it our all and hit the town with it. We didn’t have anything in development at Disney Plus yet. It was another example of being able to carve a path where we didn’t. it was one by virtue of a great story, a great driver, a great series. The deal took some time to complete, but we are really excited to move forward. “
Can’t wait for this show. As a kid I used to go out and make my own movies with my siblings, so this story is definitely the kind of thing I can relate to.
