Mexican cinema is becoming more and more important around the world, both for its directors and for its stories. And for example, ‘basket of bones’, a Mexican horror movie which, due to his time at the Tribeca Festival, prompted critics to compare him to “Hereditary” and “The Babadook”.
‘Huesera’ is the first film by Mexican director Michelle Garzasuffered several delays caused by the health emergency, however, in the latest edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, it won the acclaim of the participants, thanks to its history marked by motherhood or, by women who had not planned to be mothers.
Director Michelle Garza Cervera won Best New Narrative Director Awards and Nora Ephron at the Tribeca International Film Festival, held in New York, for ‘Huesera’ and “her critique of social hierarchies, religion, sexuality and heteronormative relationships while remaining a strong and visceral gender story, “said the jury.
The theme of motherhood in the genre is something that horror films like “Rosemary’s Baby”, Netflix’s “The Dark Daughter” or Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” have touched upon. And ‘Huesera’ with its plot has managed to be compared to great exponents of contemporary horror such as ‘Hereditary’ by Ari Aster, and ‘The Babadook’ by director Jennifer Kent.
