Taylor Sheridanthe creator of the hugely popular drama series, Yellowstonehas decided to intervene to direct the pilot episode of the limited series spinoff in 6 parts, 1883: Bass Reeves. The series will star an Emmy-nominated actor David Oyelowo (Nightingale, Selma) as the legendary lawman of the Wild West.
Oyelowo revealed Sheridan’s new assignment during remarks he made at the dinner held to introduce Paramount + to 150 members of the London entertainment community.
Oyelowo also expressed his excitement about the project to Deadline, saying:
“The reality is that [Taylor] he is one of the best directors on the planet ”.
1883: The Bass Reeves Story “traces the life of the famous lawman since he was born in slavery. After the civil war he escaped his captivity, as Oyelowo explained, to live in the Indian Territories where he learned the languages and localization skills he used when he was commissioned as Deputy Marshal to guard the territories “,” which were incredibly illegal, “the actor said.
“The death rate of being a deputy marshal at the time was so high that the fact that he had 3,000 arrests – and a career that spanned his 60s – were things that were simply unthinkable,” Oyelowo said.
He went on to say, “For me, it’s definitely a big deal. Especially since I went out with it twice and the whole industry said no to the idea of the story being told.”
Reeves, Oyelowo said, is the historical figure on which the Lone Ranger was based. “But, of course, the whitewash meant we had a very different character to what Bass Reeves actually was.”
