The slogan for Christopher Nolanit is the imminent epic The Odyssey“Defying the Gods,” seems perfectly appropriate. Not only does it anticipate Odysseus’ mythical journey home, it also mirrors what Nolan himself is doing to the film industry.
With the film still nine months away from releaseThe Odyssey is already reshaping the theater landscape. Tickets are sold out in select markets, and major theater chains are doing everything they can to keep up with Nolan’s vision of how cinema should be experienced.
IMAX 70mm film is officially back in the spotlight and Nolan is leading the pack. Thanks to the impact of Oppenheimer and the growing enthusiasm for large format cinema, cinemas are making serious improvements.
Variety reports that Cinemark has partnered with IMAX to expand access to 70mm film screening, giving audiences in the United States and South America more chances to see The Odyssey exactly as Nolan intended.
As part of this new deal, twelve Cinemark theaters are upgrading their existing IMAX screens to IMAX with Laser, a format that has become a major talking point during Oppenheimer’s 2023 release.
New 70mm IMAX locations include Cinemark Seven Bridges in Woodridge, a Chicago suburb, Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs and Cinemark Tinseltown in Rochester, all ready in time for The Odyssey.
This move puts Nolan squarely alongside cinematic heavyweights like James Cameron AND Peter Jacksonboth of which in their own ways have pushed the boundaries of cinematic technology. At the moment, only about 30 theaters in the world can handle a 70mm IMAX print, those enormous reels that light up social media every time Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas AndersonOR Ryan Coogler distribute them for your own projects.
And as before, Cameron’s 3D revolution AvatarsNolan is now redefining what premium cinema looks and feels like.
It’s another chapter in Nolan’s ongoing mission to keep movie theaters alive and thriving. While this expansion doesn’t yet reach every corner of the globe, it is a significant step towards more accessible high-end movie presentation.
Interestingly, none of the new IMAX 70mm Cinemark sites are located in New York or Los Angeles, a move that opens the door for audiences outside of those movie capitals to experience Nolan’s preferred format firsthand.
This push towards large-format storytelling doesn’t stop there. Denis Villeneuve He’s reportedly planning to shoot Dune: Part 3 in IMAX 70mm, further fueling the renaissance that Nolan helped ignite.
If this truly is the future of cinema, where filmmakers and fans alike celebrate the greatness of actual cinematic projection, then the Olympians might just sit back and watch.
The Odyssey will be released in theaters worldwide, including select IMAX 70mm locations, on July 17, 2026.
