HBO has released a chilling new trailer En: Welcome to Derryteasing what’s to come in the “weeks ahead”, and builds on the chaos of the brutal premiere and offers a disturbing look at the horrors still lurking beneath the streets of Derry.
The footage suggests that the city’s Native American inhabitants may have discovered a way to trap “It” long ago, perhaps explaining why the creature remains tied to Derry. Meanwhile, the US military seems determined to capture the terrifying entity for itself, which, let’s be honest, is never a good idea.
In addition to the trailer, HBO revealed a Halloween surprise for fans and announced that episode 2, titled “The Thing in the Dark,” will debut soon on HBO Max starting Friday, October 31 at 12:00 AM PT/3:00 AM ET. It will also air on HBO this Sunday, November 2, at 9pm ET/PT.
Showrunner Jason Fuchs spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how the premiere’s shocking ending sets the tone for the rest of the season. “The whole story of the season is set in motion by what happens at the end of episode 1, the Capitol Theater massacre. You’ll see in episode 2 how the aftershocks play out.”
He added: “We know that we’re telling, in a way, a story that’s familiar. We’re going back to a town that people have seen, we’re going to go back to a character, Pennywise, that people are now familiar with over the course of two movies, and we’re going to have children in danger.”
“But the question was, ‘How do you surprise the audience? How do you communicate that right from the start of the season? How do you really pull the rug out from under the audience’s feet and say: All bets are off, the rules don’t apply, anything is possible?'” Fuchs concluded.
From the looks of this new footage, En: Welcome to Derry it’s only getting darker and more disturbing from here. Pennywise’s reign of terror has just begun.
