BABY REINDEER Creator Richard Gadd’s new HBO Max series HALF MAN kicks off with first look at violent family drama

Little reindeer Creator Riccardo Gadd is collaborating with Jamie Bell for a brand new limited series called Half Man, and is diving headfirst into another intense emotional roller coaster.

The first look at the upcoming drama just dropped, offering a look at Gadd and Bell as the conflicting brothers at the center of the story.

In Half a manGadd plays Ruben, alongside Bell as Niall. The story explores a turbulent brotherhood fractured by trauma and time. It’s a six-episode deep dive into an abusive, emotionally charged relationship that unravels over nearly four decades.

The official logline sets the stage:

“Half Man follows ‘brothers’ Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Richard Gadd). When Niall’s ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that throws us back through their lives.

“Across nearly 40 years, from the 1980s to the present day, Mitchell Robertson and Stuart Campbell play Niall (Robertson) and Ruben (Campbell) as young people, in a series that explores the highs and lows of Ruben and Niall’s relationship, from meeting them as troubled teenagers to witnessing their fight as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry and inspiring along the way.

“The series will capture the wild energy of a changing city – indeed, a changing world – and delve into the depths of what it means to be a man.*”

The younger versions of the brothers will be played Mitchell Robertson (as teenage Niall) and Stuart Campbell (as the teenager Ruben). The shifting timeline will allow viewers to witness the brothers’ initial bond, the cracks that form and, ultimately, the outbreak of violence that brings them back together.

If you saw Little reindeeryou know Gadd isn’t afraid to put the raw, uncomfortable truth under the microscope. That series dealt with stalking, trauma, and abuse in a bluntly semi-autobiographical narrative. With Half Man, he clearly doesn’t give up.

Get ready for something intense and exciting. Half a man will premiere on HBO Max and BBC in 2026.
