Mattel Exec “Blown Away” from the first MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Director’s Cut

Mattel is charging full speed into the world of cinematic universes and the next big adventure is here Masters of the Universea live-action reboot that promises to bring the power of Eternia to the big screen in a big way.

With Barbie Breaking records and redefining what toy-based storytelling can be, all eyes are now on He-Man and Skeletor to see if lightning can strike twice. According to Mattel Studios’ Robbie Brennerthe first results are very promising.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the President and Chief Content Officer of Mattel Studios offered an enthusiastic reaction after screening a Director’s Cut of Masters of the Universe, calling the film “a lot of fun” and “a perfect compliment to Barbie.” His verdict? She was “stunned.”

“I went to visit the set last year, and of all the films I’ve worked on in my life – even Barbie – it was [the biggest]. It was huge,” Brenner said.

“I think we occupied two or three recording studios, on eight sub-lots. [Characters] walking around that are eight feet tall. There are these crazy characters in this movie.

This scope is no surprise, after all we are talking about He-Man and the film is directed by Hornet director Travis Knightwith a star-studded cast led by Nicola Galitzine like He-Man and Jared Leto entering Skeletor’s iconic skull.

Other key cast members include Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Camila Mendes like Teela, and Idris Elba as a man of arms. The ensemble becomes even deeper with Sam C. Wilson, Kojo Attah, Hafthor Björnsson, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur JóhannessonAND Jon Xue Zhang bringing fan-favorite characters to life.

While Masters of the Universe obviously has high expectations, Brenner made it clear that Mattel isn’t trying to replicate the Barbie formula, but rather carve out a unique path for each property.

“I think people realize, ‘Okay, Mattel is here.’ We’re a force. Not everything is going to be Barbie, but at the same time we’re serious.

“We want to tell great stories,” he explained. “I don’t feel any kind of impediment. I feel like we just have them [an] incredible opportunity with all this intellectual property.”

With Amazon MGM backing the project and Mattel fully committed to building its cinematic universe, Masters of the Universe has the potential to launch a new era of big screen adventures in Eternia.

Now that Mattel Studios sees film and television as a single ecosystem, Brenner sees the future wide open.

“Now, with Mattel Studios having television and film under one umbrella and one ecosystem, that’s it [are] infinite possibilities.”

I’m not very optimistic about it Masters of the Universe. I love this franchise, but I don’t know if it will actually pay off. But I hope the movie surprises me and is better than I expected.

That future may depend on how the public responds Masters of the Universe when it hits theaters on June 5, 2026.
