At the Zurich Film Festival, Colin Farrell open on his trip with The Batman And like the extraordinary transformation into Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot at the end led to Hbo’s Penguin series.
It is interesting to note that it was not only the story or the character who convinced him to immerse himself deeper in the Gotham’s underworld, but the innovative make -up work of Mike Marino.
Farrell admitted that at the beginning he was not completely sold on director Matt Reeves’Take the character.
“I was thinking of Burgess Meredith and I was thinking of Danny Devito … and that child who sat on the carpet in Dublin at the age of 5 to watch Batman ’66, and then at the age of 11 or 12 saw Tim Burton Batman with Danny Devito, and he used to draw Batman’s signals on his jeans.
“I was like, wow, I’m so excited. The script came, I read it, and I was like, eh?
He admitted that he initially fired the penguin as too “a note”, but he said that his perception has completely moved once he revealed the design of Marino’s makeup.
“I will never forget, Matt went, ‘come here, come here, come here.’ And he opened his laptop and went, “look!” It was the first time I saw the makeup … and the gears cried.
When Farrell asked if he was CGI, Reeves replied: “No, [Marino] He said he can make you look like this and nobody notices it. “This was the moment when everything acted for the actor.
“I was like, it is extraordinary. Then the script became clear to me. I was able to see through the imagination of Mike Marino and every small pockmark and every scar.
“The character was fierce, but there was also, I could imagine, a sadness for the aspects of that character’s life … gave me so much information.”
The transformation was so powerful that he changed the way Farrell performed.
“Then we did a test on the screen and it was very strange. It was surprising. But it was very strange. You just have to give us. There was a degree, let’s say, possession. To be overcome by something as I have ever been.
“Much was the distance that was granted to me, the apparent distance that was offered to me. It is very powerful to look in the mirror and see that he looked at you. He was wild.”
He explained how the prostheses gave him a freedom that he did not expect.
“I could riff all day like the penguin. I could come to this phase and talk to you for five hours and not break the character once.
“The strange thing was, and I’m not saying it as a pride, it was only strange, the strange thing was that I would have had a totally different, totally different humor.
“I sent messages from my children, you know?” So he slipped into Oz’s Brooklyn growl, imitating what he would have sent to his children: “How’s the boy? Are you doing your homework?”
About three weeks of shooting The BatmanFarrell approached the manufacturer Dylan Clark With the idea of a spin -Off of the penguin.
“Mike’s makeup Design was so extraordinary and Really Was Very Moving, like it was very touching again, to be a part of it, Because i Just Felt Like i was stepping Into the lineage of arts like dick smith, who did the original planet of the apes and did f. murray abraham’s makeup, Salieri, on Milos Forman’s Amadeus, and Won the Oscar for that;
“So I felt that part, I was like a part of Hollywood’s story. It was really beautiful. But there was no slow for this. It was because the trick was so extraordinary, I thought, this is such a waste to have only five scenes of this, not me, not in it. We are able to do so much with this beautiful trick that Mike has designed.”
Clark later followed Farrell on the development of a series, which in the end became that of HBO Penguin. “And that’s it. But we had no idea that it would have been welcomed as it was at all. Really. No idea.”
As for the future of Gotham, Farrell confirmed that he had read Reeves ‘script’ Part II of BatmanAnd it is as excited as the fans.
“I can tell you, I read it to finish. And as far as I loved the first script – I know I have doubts about the part of the penguin – but the first Batman film, the screenplay I read was ingenious.”
The sequel has made fun of: “It is deeper, it is more frightening. The stakes are higher emotionally … just like a fan of screenplays, stories and films, it is so brilliant. And Matt took his time and has created only an extraordinary story, really so full of feeling, really sad in the parts. I am very excited to see it, whatever my involvement in it.”
