Chris Columbus It was behind some of the greatest successes of all time, from Mrs. Dubumfire AND At home alone to the first two Harry Potter Movies. But, even with that track, he found himself unexpectedly ousted since 2005 of 20th Century Fox Fantastic Four Movies.
Although Columbus is accredited as an executive manufacturer in the superhero film, he says that the credit is misleading. Columbus said during a recent interview on The Fade to Black Podcast:
“We were in a strange situation. The first” Fantastic Four “, I had worked on a script. There were many writers involved. They were about to make a movie and I was producing it.
“I met the director and I had some ideas. In practice I said:” Some of this conceptual art should seem more similar to Jack Kirby, the creator of the Fantastic Four, and should seem more similar to the Marvel silver era. ”
“I left that meeting and on the way back from my house I received a call from the head of the 20th century Fox saying that I was fired and I had too much opinion.”
At the time, Columbus was anxious to leave his mark on the superhero genre. He had already written a Daredevil Script and had been interested in directing Spider-man Before Sam Raimi Took the reins. However, be fired from Fantastic Four He left a mark. “He probably tightened me a little” in comic movies, he admitted.
Looking back now, Columbus has no regrets for having removed superhero projects.
“Over the years people have done so well that I personally lost interest in making a superhero movie. It started a little with” Spider-Man 2. “When I saw what Sam Raimi did, I thought it was a perfect superhero movie.
Certainly Matt Reeves “The Batman” with Robert Pattinson was also a brilliant film. I realized that I no longer have the desire to make those films because people are doing better than I could never have at this point in my career. “
This was not the only clash that Columbus had with Fox. In an interview in 2013 with Blackfilm.com, he recalled a disagreement on how to bring Ben Grimm/The Thing to the big screen.
He discussed for a completely CGI version of the character, saying that “you could never get the size of Ben Grimm if it is not CGI or something like that”.
In the end, Fantastic Four was directed by Tim Story and recited Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris EvansAND Michael Chiklis. The film obtained $ 333 million all over the world, but critics were hard.
Despite this, Chiklis recently defended the film, saying: “They really spread our films, and they were very underestimated considering … they were much loved by the public. It was one of those cases in which critics were not great for those films, but the public was and this still remains”.
Columbus may have been fired Fantastic FourBut the franchise has still left its mark on him, even if only as a reminder that sometimes having “too much opinion” in Hollywood can cost you a direction of direction.
