Predator: the Badlands movie at Comic-Con offers a brutal and unexpected opening

The fans packed in Hall H at Comic-Con obtained an absolute surprise when the 20th century studies shared 15 minutes of Predator: BadlandsAnd let me tell you, it was surprising, brutal, intense and different from everything we saw in this franchise before.

If you thought you knew what a predator movie was, thinking out, director Dan Trachtenberg Being throwing the rules out and is doing something crazy!

Spoiler in front for the first part of the film

This is not your typical “Predator arrives on Earth and hunting humans”. No. Badlands launches the script creating the predator himself, his name is Dek, the central character.

This is his story, the journey of his hero. The movie creates an emotional and violent narrative that is personal, giving us an internal look at the Yautja culture and the wild family dynamic.

Dek is considered the vein of his family. His father sees him as weak and dishonorable, believing that it is better for him to die than to live in shame. The opening scene does not waste time to establish that hard reality.

The first sequence is a vicious duel between Dek and his older brother. It is something we saw glimpses in the trailer, but in the full context it is fantastic. The two collide with long and curved red blades that shine in a struggle that is wild.

Choreography and visual effects, although still unfinished, seem already impressive and we know that Trachtenberg knows how to provide visceral action.

While the opening sequence takes place, we learn that DEK once saved his brother’s life. He met for Dek, his older brother was tamed by his father to kill him.

But it is clear that Dek’s brother has no intention of doing it and is preparing to send him to his first hunt to demonstrate his value as a warrior.

Dek shares with his brother who wants to undertake one of the most fatal planets in the galaxy, which hosts a terrifying apice predators in an irregular way that their father also fears. This is not just a hunt, it is a suicidal mission destined to redeem his honor.

While his brother is trying to convince him not to go to that planet, their father arrives and hell is unleashed.

What follows is a wild sequence that astonished the jaw in which the father is furious that his eldest son has not yet killed Dek. Tensions explode in violence and the scene intensifies into a brutal struggle between father and son. He is wild: his father hacks his son’s arm, stabs him and in the end he kills him in cold blood.

But before he died, the older brother manages a last act of challenge, launches Dek’s ship, sending him to dart towards the hostile planet where he waits for his real test.

The last thing we see is that the deck accelerates in the void, bringing the weight of the sacrifice of his brother and the awareness that his father wanted him dead. The scene cuts there and the room has absolutely exploded.

If the first 15 minutes are indicative, Predator: Badlands It is a bold reinvention of the franchise. Trachtenberg is giving us a story of predators that looks like epic and mythical, keeping raw and violent fans.

Everyone in that room went away thinking about the same thing: this film will be tough.
