In front of Star TrekBig Hall H Panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Entertainment Weekly gave fans a first look Paul Giamatti Like the mysterious villain of the next series Star Trek: Starfleet AcademyAnd this show promises to be one of the most intriguing trekking items for years.
The series is set in the 32nd century, following the events of Star Trek: Discovery. The galaxy is still recovering from the devastating “burning”, which fractured the federation and sent the stars fleet in a long period of isolation.
Now, 120 years later, the Academy is opening its doors again, welcoming the first new class of cadets in over a century.
Fans can expect to see a wide range of species among students, together with some family faces from all franchise.
TIG Notaro returns like Jett Reno, Oded fehr Like Admiral Vance, e Mary Wiseman He returned like Tilly. Furthermore, Voyager Fans are around like Robert Picardo He will resume his role as an emergency medical hologram, with co-showrunner Noga Landau spiteful:
“Starfleet Academy will continue its story in a way that Voyager fans will find really satisfactory.”
The advantage of the show, Holly HunterHe will play a captain of the stellar fleet that acts as a chancellor of the Academy and shares a special connection with one of the new cadets, played by Sandro Rosta.
As for Giamatti, we know for a while that has been chosen as a bad guy of the show, but EW’s revelation offers the first real details about his character, and this role could simply realize Jamatti’s dream to play a Klingon.
According to the report, a “great alien presence” in the Starfleet Academy comes from a race of Klingon’s hybrid species.
The images show Jamatti with thin characteristics inspired by Klingon, less aggressive than traditional Klingon, but with unmistakable notes both to classic trekking design and to the reinvention of the species by Discovery.
Another cadet, interpreted by Karim DianeIt sports a more traditional aspect of Klingon, mentioning a wider hybrid plot.
Landau and Co-Showrunner Alex Kurtzman Stretched to Giamatti after opening his love openly for Star Trek and desire to play a Klingon while promoting The contrasts. It seems that he got his desire.
While the specific details of the plot are still in the winding phase, Kurtzman has revealed that the character of Giamatti embodies the post-cancellation struggle of the Federation to reconnect the fractured worlds and the darker forces that resist this effort.
“It represents a tide that has crossed the [real] world in a very deep and shocking way. ”
Kurtzman explained. “I say it without taking a political position. This is part of what it means to invite everyone to the tent. One of my favorite things on Star Trek is that it comes through the corridor. People on all sides of the political spectrum love it for different reasons. It is something we really wanted to be faithful here.”
He continued with one of the fundamental themes of the show:
“One of the things we see all over the world is now what hatred is based on sowing the division between the things that connect us as human beings and how hatred is used as Bludgeon to destroy empathy, which I think is at the end of what it is Star Trek.
“In its center, it is: we may not seem the same, but we are the same. Finding that common ground and understanding a way to understand our differences is at the center of what [Star Trek creator Gene] Roddenberry was talking. “
A school environment might seem lighter than the past adventures of Trek, but Starfleet Academy is immersing itself headlong in some heavy themes giving us a mix of new blood and legendary characters.
And Paul Giamatti like a bad hybrid of Klingon? This is the type of bold choice of casting that could make this series an extraordinary one in the modern era of trekking.
What do you think of the look inspired by Giamatti’s Klingon? Are you ready for the stars fleet to deform in the 32nd century?
