Next Clay The film will not look like any other DCU project that is developed. While Superman It aims to inspire hope, this dives deep into pure terror. Speaking with the morning of the CBS, James Gunn he made fun of the tone of the film, saying:
“And then we have Clayface, which is like a totally different thing. Even if it is in the same universe, it is a complete horror film. This is one of the things we want to do … there is no corporate style. It’s not as if every film will be like Superman.”
For Gunn, the goal is to keep every project distinct, reflecting what DC Comics has always done on the page:
“The artists, directors and writers who create each of them will make their sense.”
The film comes from the writer Mike Flanaganthe mind behind The pursuit of Hill House AND Sleep doctorHe wrote the original screenplay. While he saw some rewrites from Guide screenwriter Hossein AminiGunn insists “It’s all Mike’s story”.
Giving life to history James WatkinsThe director behind the gripping psychological nightmare of 2024 Don’t speak badlyas well The woman in black AND Lake eden. With Flanagan and Watkins at the helm, expect a DC film that leans on atmospheric terror and visceral horror.
Gunn has already said of the film: “[It’s] Pure fucking horror, as, totally real. Their version of that film is so real, true, psychological and horror of the body and gross. “
Flanagan opened mainly on the project and confirmed that his version of Clay was strongly inspired by the acclaimed two parts Batman: the animated series “Feat of clay” episode.
When asked if his script was inspired by it, Flanagan said:
“Of course it was. I mean it’s the perfect [story]. “Feat of Clay”, Ron Perlman, for me, that’s all. That two sides put me out of combat. The short answer is that it is absolutely what inspired my script.
“This is the world in which I wanted to live. Batman: the animated series when I was growing was my Batman. [Michael] Keaton was my Batman, the animated series was really my Batman. “
That emotional anchor of the animated series clearly left a mark on Flanagan. Although he is not directing the film because of other projects such as Carrie, his story could still model the final product.
Clayface appeared for the first time in the investigative comics in 1940. Traditionally, the character is an actor who becomes a criminal after having embraced his monstrous alter ego. Over the decades, several versions have shared his body as shifting, similar to a form of clay, an ability that will undoubtedly play in the disturbing tone of the film.
DC Studios plans to release Clayface on 11 September 2026.
