James Gunn explains the circumstances in which his Superman could kill someone

James Gunn’S Superman It is finally here, and it seems that DCU has started strongly. With David Corenswet wearing the cloak and a stacked cast including Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas HaultAND Nathan FillionThis interpretation restarted on the man of steel is already very different, brighter, more hope and a little stranger. But not to take it for granted which means that Gunn is completely softening the edges of Superman.

In a recent question and wired answer, Gunn was asked directly if his Superman would have ever killed. After reading a card he asked, “Why don’t Superman kills?”, Gunn turned to Corenswet but answered the question on his own:

“I think he believes in a fundamental right to life. I want to say, I think he’s not alone in him.”

However, Gunn quickly followed with some further complexity:

“I think that if, for example, he had to kill to protect someone’s life, he would probably do it, even if it would be difficult for him.”

So no, we probably don’t see a happy Kryptonian, but Gunn is leaving the door open for morally gray situations in which Superman could make an impossible choice.

This echoes at the same time divisive Zack Snyder’S Steel manWhere Henry CavillSuperman kills General Zod to save innocent lives. Snyder supported that decision in a GQ interview last year, supporting:

“Zod would not stop. He would fight [Superman] Until he killed him or Superman killed Zod … if Superman is unable to manage that position, then it is false … he had to turn to the scenarios that came to him. He can’t choose when something is outside your morality. “

Whether you love or hate that moment, Gunn seems to recognize a similar reality. This new Superman could face choices without clean results. It is not a question of abandoning its values. It is what happens when those values are pushed on the edge.

It is interesting to note that Corenswet himself expressed interest in exploring a darker path to the character in future projects. In a previous interview, he said he would like to see his Superman in a R-RAD environment.

This does not mean that we are heading to a hyper-violent superman film, but in the Gunn world he is building, it is clear that even the most virtuous hero could face the type of dilemma that makes him question everything.
